Say Anything » Another Economic Development Failure: Global ...

General Electric Motorcars is a manufacturer of electric cars (read: glorified golf cars) in Fargo, ND that has been heavily subsidized by the state and the federal government. Just doing some quick searching, in 2000 the company received a five year exemption from income taxes. The type of electric cars the company produces, NEV’s or Neighborhood Electric Vehicles, were eligible for a $2,500 tax credit under the “stimulus” spending bill. GEM was also part of former Senator Byron Dorgan’s much-hyped Red River Valley Research Corridor , which filters federal “research” dollars (read: pork) through North Dakota’s universities and to companies like GEM.

The company was politically well-connected. In 2008, Governor John Hoeven awarded GEM North Dakota’s “Exporter of the Year” award . GEM’s cars were used in 2009 at President Obama’s “Green Inaugural Ball.” And it was pretty clear that when Senator Byron Dorgan got behind billions of dollars of funding for batter research in the waning days of his term in office, he had an eye toward some of that money being targeted at GEM.

“From the Governor and our U.S. Congressmen to the local mayor, we get outstanding support on every level in this state,” said Rick Kasper of GEM in 2008 .

Now, the company (once owned by Chrysler and currently owned by snowmobile and ATV manufacturer Polaris) is being dissolved, with elements of its current manufacturing being moved to other states.

Millions in state and federal tax dollars down the drain. Another “victory” for North Dakota’s government-run economic development.
