Little Lions' trio earn all-state volleyball honors

On Thursday night inside the Intramural Building on Penn State’s campus, there was a reunion of sorts.

Most of the members of the State College boys’ volleyball team got together for a pick-up match, with a bunch of future varsity members and even a few from previous seasons on hand.

With college looming for the recent graduates, it was a chance to relive a little bit of a very successful season.

“We had a pretty good crew,” said Dan Pons, who is one of three Little Lions who were recently named to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class AAA All-State team.

Pons was joined on that list by Patrick Moore and Evan Hummer after the three helped State College to the PIAA semifinals in June, a year after playing supporting roles in a state championship.

“It’s a really special honor and really cool to join that list,” Hummer said. “We get to follow in the footsteps of some of the great players in State High’s past. It’s cool after not playing as much as maybe I would have liked for the earlier part of my high school career. It makes it extra-special for my senior year.”

“It’s pretty cool,” Moore said. “We’re glad to get recognition for playing well all year.”

With all but one starter new this past season, the Little Lions still surged at the end of the season, survived a grueling five-set first-round marathon win over Seneca Valley in the state tournament and an extra playoff round in the quarterfinals before falling to North Allegheny in the semifinals.

“It’s awesome to look back and see what we’ve done,” said Moore, who was planning another get-together off the court this weekend with his former teammates to watch a replay of their dramatic win over Seneca Valley.

Moore was the Little Lions’ top offensive threat, leading the way with 310 kills while hitting .319 to go with 183 digs, 86 blocks and 54 aces. For his career he had 408 kills, 426 digs, 177 blocks and 105 aces.

Pons directed the offense with 933 assists and led the team with 77 aces. He also had 117 blocks and 107 digs. He finished his career with 1,644 assists, 230 aces, 319 digs and 166 blocks.

Hummer had 182 blocks this past season — 76 of them terminal stuffs — and 207 kills. He racked up 312 blocks and 323 kills for his Little Lion career.
