Ruby and Oliver are most popular names for babies in Wales

RUBY and Oliver are the most popular baby names in Wales, according to new official figures.

Oliver overtook Jack to become the most common choice for boys in 2010, and also remained top of the pile in England.

Ruby – the name of Charlotte Church’s three-year-old daughter – rose a place to become the most popular girl’s name after being picked by 244 sets of new parents, though Olivia retained the top spot in England for the second successive year.

Amelia, Ava and Mia climbed in to the top 10 most popular names for girls in Wales at the expense of Emily, Grace and Ella, according to the figures from the Office for National Statistics

For boys, Jacob and Logan knocked William and Rhys out of the top 10, with Ethan up three places to third and Jacob rising by 10 places to fourth.

But Dr Julia Cresswell, author of the Chambers Dictionary of First Names, said the list of top choices was filled with “boring” and “unimaginative” names.

She said: “Half the names in the top 10 are the same as 10 years ago – there has been very, very little change. I think that reflects the very conservative-leaning society we are living in today.

“It’s very different from, say, 20 years ago when there was a rapid turnover of names.”

And Dr Cresswell said she would have expected to see more Welsh names in the top 10 on this side of the border.

She told the Western Mail: “I’m surprised how few specifically Welsh names there are. Seren has been popular for quite a while in Wales.

“Megan is a Welsh name but it’s so naturalised that people don’t think of it as that.

“Ffion is in 17th place [for girls in Wales] and that again is going down. That’s been quite popular in Wales for quite a number of years now.”

Patrick Sims-Williams, professor of Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth University, said: “Choice of names reveals the aspirations of parents or their families, and the choice of Welsh names, or Welsh spellings like Tomos or Steffan, is part of this.

“Some fashions are shared with England, like Oliver and Olivia, and also the liking for names that used to be regarded as short-forms such as Jack or Jac, Alfie and Charlie.

“Few Welsh names get into the top 10 and those that do are ones that English people can pronounce, like Megan and Seren. In the case of Dylan one doesn’t know whether the parents themselves pronounce it with Welsh or English vowels.
