Daisy De La Hoya bringing the rock party to Spicoli's

WATERLOO --- If you know Daisy De La Hoya, it's likely because you follow reality television.

Specifically, the niece of boxer Oscar De La Hoya was a contestant on VH1's "Rock of Love 2," a competition to see who would win the heart of Poison rocker Bret Michaels, in the spring of 2008.

Daisy De La Hoya was such a viewer favorite that in 2009 she was given her own show on VH1, "Daisy of Love," where suitors vied for her.

But, De La Hoya insisted, she was never trying to be a reality TV star. Instead, she has always wanted to create and perform rock and roll music.

"I did the shows, and I'm so thankful for that. It was so life-changing," she said during a phone interview Tuesday. "But then I sort of got off track with the partying, the fun, whatever, and sort of wasn't creating anything. I was just taking everything. It was very, very hollow."

So, since getting a band together in November last year, Daisy De La Hoya and the Beautiful Disaster have been on a national club tour.

"I'm super thankful of the fact that I put a band together in November of 2010 and I'm already going on a U.S. tour," De La Hoya said. "We booked that on people taking a chance on me, and I appreciate that. Hopefully, the fans that have supported me will come over to this and see there is more than what I was doing on TV."

Daisy De La Hoya and the Beautiful Disaster will be at Spicoli's Grill and the Reverb Rockgarden in Waterloo Tuesday. Tickets are $10.

With no record label, no merchandise and not even an EP to sell at shows, the band is relying solely on people showing up to concerts.

For De La Hoya, it's a passion project. She plans to record an EP eventually, and songs patrons will hear at the show will be going on that record.

"I don't just come out on stage and be boring; obviously that's not my personality," she said.
