5.4L ticking - F150online Forums

Ok, I have a 97 f150 with the 5.4 and 133K. Its been running great , super quiet and not any issues until yesterday I was driving home and noticed a ticking sound while in the cab. sounds exactly like the normal injector click but loud enough to wear I can hear it in the cab and I know it wasnt there before. Im pretty sure its not the cam phasers because the noise is coming for the drivers side, top of the engine, about half way back.. when under the hood it just sounds like the fuel injector noise but a little louder on that side than the other side. its not loud enough to where it sounds really bad, its actually kind of hard to hear in the cab but im noticing it now and have not before. I dont know if any of these things can affect it, or if there is something wrong with the injector to make it tick louder than normal. I bought a set of motocraft plugs and had planed on changing the plugs just cuz the millage and im guessing there still the stock plugs.. My only guess or hope is that mabey it could be a plug starting to come lose? it idels a tad rough, not bad just enough to feel that its not smooth, s few small jitters I guess.. You dont have cam phasers that started in 04 phasers are for variable camshaft timing your engine doesn't have that. The old modular engines are now having issues with broken exhaust manifold studs. That might be your problem. Are you using motorcraft filters or better. Fram filters with poor antidrain back valves also can cause ticking noise after years of using them they say.. Would using a fram oil filter really cause this noticeable of a difference right away? I have good oil pressure, im starting to wonder if it just the heat making the injector clatter more noticeable.. My biggest concern is that its a spark plug working its way loose, im thinking I will change the plugs tomorrow though im not looking forward to it just to make sure there is not one coming loose. also ill climb up under and try to check out the exhaust maini but it doesnt sound like a main leak more of a click, I tell you it sounds just like the injectors but louder what the heck! You would think if the fram filter did thqt much damage they wouldnt sell them, or there would be a lawsuit or something lol.. I'll change it tomorrow, I really dont want to check all the plugs cuz I cant just check em, mind as well replace them while im in there, just didnt want to be doing all that but also dont want it to be pushing a plug out either.
