Pet’s Corner - July 2011 28 Jun 2011 Good Karma for the Williams family

Docklands has its share of spoiled pooches but Karma of Yarra’s Edge has raised the bar significantly.

The three-year-old cavoodle (a cross between King Charles cavalier and poodle) has a lifestyle that most humans can only dream of.

When Karma’s family goes on holidays, she goes to Mornington Lodge where she has her own room known as the “Fluffy Suite” complete with couch and television.

“She’s a real princess,” said owner Janyne Williams. “We’ve brought her up more like a cat, so she’s spoiled rotten.”

Janyne then proceeded to give Karma a kiss and a cuddle … “Who’s the best bubby in the whole of Docklands?” she cooed.

Karma is obviously the most popular member of the Williams household – parents Mike and Janyne, daughter Bec and son Stephen – who live in Tower 4 at Yarra’s Edge.  Bec is a construction project co-ordinator on the ATO project in Collins St, Batman’s Hill.

Karma was purchased three years ago as a tiny fluff ball at a time when Janyne was quite ill.

“We called her Karma because she has been a tonic for my health and has brought so much happiness to our family,” Janyne said.

“She’s been therapeutic for everyone and Karma is so protective of me. When Mike comes to bed, she won’t let him in!”

“When we go out she sits and cries, so we leave the radio on in the apartment so she’s got some company.  She loves 3AW,” Janyne said.

Janyne said she recently crocheted a quilt for her mother-in-law.  “But Karma loved it so much, I gave it to her instead!” she said.

“She loves to get into the wool and her toys are strewn around the apartment.”

“Her favourite toy was a little chicken drumstick which has now, thankfully, lost its squeak.”

The Williams family moved from Dock 5 to Yarra’s Edge last October and Janyne reports that Karma likes it better.

“She’s happier here because she’s got a little spot in the sun,” she said.

The Old Trainer: Walking without a leash will take time

DEAR OLD TRAINER: I have a Cavalier King Charles spaniel who's 1½ years old. He is a good dog overall and very lovable. We want to walk him without a leash, but he will not come if he is off his leash, although he comes on command in the house.

The Blenheim dogs can have a chestnut-red area on the top of their heads between the ears, but this is not important at all.

History: The Cavalier was branded for King Charles II. This Spaniel originates from King Charles spaniel. They were also bred with some pugs, this gave an inferior dog with a flatter nose, and more obvious rounded head, the dogs we see today are from this breeding. In 1920 Roswell Eldridge supplied prize-money inLondon, to breeders for almost any dogs that they had which in fact had longer noses which is meant for breeding. The spaniel is observed in Van Dyck's artwork of King Charles II, and his spaniel. By 1940 this breeding was accredited as a independent breed and was demonstrating in the Toy group of the AKC, beginning in 1996.

There are a number of king charles cavalier breeders you can find online if you made this dog your very own pet at home. Just be sure you pick a legitimate site for one's negotiations.
