Writing musicals is so very hard to do (and so is catching up)
I got back from Las Vegas yesterday after a trip that ended on a high — not, alas, a high-roller high (in seven trips there now, I am yet to gamble), nor even on that rollercoaster that passes above and through the New York, New York casino (which I am also yet to do). Instead, we took a helicopter flight into the Grand Canyon on Friday late afternoon — and landed at the base of it, near the Colorado River, for a quick champagne (or in my case, Diet Pepsi) snack before flying back as the lights came on over the city.
That meant that we didn’t see a show on Friday at all, before we took another, much longer flight home on Saturday night, landing yesterday at 10.30am. And of course, me being me, last night at 6pm I was already in a theatre, namely Holborn’s Cochrane for the fourth annual Tim Williams Award for new musical writing, featuring songs written to classical and established texts not originally intended to be sung.
I was part of the judging panel that also included The Stage’s own Paul Vale, writers Frank Lazarus and Craig Adams, director Laurie Sansom (who is also chair of Musical Theatre Matters , the advocacy group for theatre creative personnel and producers wishing to develop and champion new musicals) and Neil Marcus (Executive Director of Mercury Musical Developments , the writer-based organisation also dedicated to promoting new musicals).
MTM and MMD also recently won a joint bid for formal Arts Council funding, which means that this work is now being taken seriously at the higher reaches of the arts establishment and musical theatre writers finally have properly established groups to form a community around and forge opportunities through.
There’s a lot of talent out there, but paradoxically little new original work actually being put on — the National’s current London Road is their first original piece of original British musical theatre writing since Jerry Springer — the Opera eight years ago, and even George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who met as students over 30 years ago and have been writing together ever since, only this year finally had their first entirely original score put on in the West End with the opening of Betty Blue Eyes . George and Ants are also board members of MMD (as, to declare an interest, am I), and vigorous champions of new musical writers, awarding the annual Stiles and Drewe Best New Song Award in their names.

“He spoke of the Americans who passed through Ellis Island and whose first glimpse of their adopted country was the grand statue in New York's harbor,” she gushed. “He talked about our shared values and the common thread of the American dream across an

The major reasons people gain large amounts of fat on a mass diet is usually because they are eating too many calories. Yes, you need plenty of calories to build muscle, but too many calories will simply be stored as fat. What I recommend is slowing increasing your calories in small increments while closely monitoring your body fat levels. If you notice that you are starting to gain more fat, then reduce your calories slightly. The other cause of excess fat gain is usually due to a large intake of simple sugars. Many people on a high calorie diet resort to sugary foods and drinks because they have a lot of calories, but what they don’t realize is that the sugar is contributing to their “above average” fat storage. Just remove the sugar and replace it with starches or whole grains instead. Everyone has the potential for great abs, but to see them you must remove the layer of fat covering them. To do this you should follow a lower calorie diet that focus on reducing your body fat levels. This is just the opposite of what is required to build large amounts of mass. To build mass requires higher calorie dieting, which will cause you to gain some additional body fat as well as muscle. Sorry, but that’s the truth! Where did you hear that? I’m not quite up to that level of bench pressing, but don’t be intimidated by the strength levels of others. It doesn’t have any bearing on your training. To build muscle, you must work YOUR muscles at near maximum levels. That specific level varies with everyone, but no matter how strong or weak you may be, you can still push your muscles hard enough to spur growth. I did not start out at my current strength levels. I was much weaker, but over time, my strength increased. So will yours. No. Resistance training stresses and damages muscle tissue. Your body responds to this stress by building larger and stronger muscle fibers. Your body needs food to repair and build muscle tissue after you workout. No amount of training can make up for your lack of calories. Adding more workouts will increase the stress and damage, INCREASING the need for more calories, not reducing it.
