Kenneth and Dorothy Slentz

Mapleton, Iowa - Roy Kenneth Slentz, 84, and Dorothy Jane (Sawin) Slentz, 83, of Mapleton died tragically in a car accident Sept. 22, 2011. Inseparable lovers in high school, they were happily married for 64 years, when they embarked on their final journey to heaven together.

Service hours have been changed to 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, 510, rue Ring, Mapleton. After lunch, the burial will be in Oto Cemetery, Oto, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the Little Sioux Valley Post 9124 VFW of Oto and the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton.Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Dorothy and Kenneth grew up in the same small town of Oto, Iowa. Kenneth joined the Navy during World War II and remained a proud veteran. Kenneth and Dorothy were married August 3, 1947, in Oto.

Early in their marriage, Kenneth has taught science and Dorothy was a secretary in Sioux City. All five of their children were born in Iowa.In 1967 they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Kenneth took a position as professor of science in education. A few years later he completed his doctorate in education curriculum, with the assistance of the secretariat of Dorothy. Dorothy worked several years as a dental hygienist and assistant in surgery.

They retired near Aubigny, Manitoba, where they had a large garden, appreciated nature, and hosted many large family dinners. They spent many enjoyable summers at Laclu, Ontario, where they built the family cottage country, to enjoy for generations to come.Winters were spent in Texas, where they had many friends and family and loved participating in jam sessions. Back home in Iowa, every year has been a highlight for them.

They traveled the world together, visiting Australia, Germany, Alaska, Florida, Oregon, France, England, Mexico and Atlantic, to name a few.

Dorothy was a woman feed everyone. The facilitator was a social butterfly who loved to spend time searching for family genealogy, playing the organ, sing in choirs, and try new recipes.The infinite force of Dorothy and optimism helped her beat breast cancer at the end of life, and she became a mentor for other women.

Ken was a strong and generous man whose infectious belly laugh could fill a room. His love of learning never waned. His interests included mechanics, carpentry, painting, sculpture, and music.
