A CWS housewarming party
For the better part of three seasons, few minor league hitters matched the combination of power and patience displayed by Omaha’s Kila Ka’aihue. But Ka’aihue ended up getting only about three months worth of everyday duty in the major leagues before Kansas City shifted gears and went with its first baseman of the future in Eric...NCAA President Mark Emmert stepped to the podium near home plate and asked the near-capacity crowd at TD Ameritrade Park a question:
“Do you like the new home of college baseball?” Emmert asked.
The estimated 23,000 fans roared their approval.
The first games of the 2011 College World Series won't get started until Saturday, but the party in downtown Omaha got cranked up in a big way Friday.
The event's opening ceremonies capped a daylong introduction/celebration of the inaugural CWS at TD Ameritrade Park. The annual pre-baseball bash was always a big attraction at Rosenblatt Stadium. But this year's kickoff outdrew last summer's ceremony by almost 10,000, and the glowing Omaha skyline — from the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to Woodmen Tower — provided a dramatic new backdrop for college baseball's biggest stage.
“Your city is very proud to be a part of this partnership,” Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle said, “as we start a new era and a new history for the College World Series.”
The opening ceremonies began with a taped introduction by former President George H.W. Bush played over the ballpark's videoscreen. Former President George W. Bush is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for Saturday's opening game.
Friday's event included the traditional introduction of all eight teams in the field: North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Florida, Texas, Virginia, Cal, South Carolina and Texas A&M. The players and coaches walked in from the centerfield entrance as fireworks and flames shot up from the field.
Former University of Minnesota standout and Major League Hall of Famer Dave Winfield was part of the celebration. One of the most dominant athletes to play in the College World Series, Winfield was unable to attend last year's opening ceremonies, when the NCAA recognized its CWS Legends Team.
Friday's event also had the Special Ops Para-Commandos dropping into the stadium, and country music star Martina McBride sang a cappella versions of “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.
