Local business owner David Holland has ridden horses since he was 15. Recently, he’s joined the law enforcement community and volunteered his riding skills and mount, Sugar to protect and serve Dickson and surrounding communities.

“I can actually put handcuffs on you and never get off the saddle,” said Holland, who’s with the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol.

Holland and several local volunteers have collaborated to form mounted patrol units to assist local law enforcement during large outdoor events, like Old Timers Day and the Dickson Stampede Days Rodeo, and search and rescue operations.

Three separate mounted units – with the sheriff’s office, an independent unit, and Dickson city Parks and Recreation – offer their services throughout the county and region.

“We’ve been going for a little over a year and a half,” said Jimmy Mann, a narcotics officer with the Dickson Police Department.

Mann, whose horse partner is Bandit, was approached by former county Sheriff Tom Wall about forming a mounted patrol unit last year.

“I picked a group of people who I knew had good horses, had good sense, had good moral character, and got with Tom on who I’d picked,” added Mann. “And he approved that.”

The original unit included about 16 riders, and current Sheriff Jeff Bledsoe has remained dedicated to the program.

“They’re just people who have a love for horses and want to be involved in helping the community,” said Bledsoe, “and they’ve taken that and channeled it to where it’s a positive for Dickson County.”

The sheriff’s office unit presently consists of four members, Holland and his wife Linda (partner: Nevada), T.J. Jackson (partner: Suzy), a National Park Service law enforcement officer, and Joel Perkins (partner: Memphis).
