Fall 2011 plan: Attending Gonzaga University to study mechanical engineering and possibly minor in Spanish or economics.

What is the key to academic success? "The key to academic success is to be well-rounded. You may get the highest grade if you devote all of your time to studying, but doing this hinders your full academic ability. It is nice to give the brain a break once in awhile by going to a movie with friends, going on a camping trip, by volunteering, and so on. Experiencing the world around you first-hand teaches you more than any book will. A book cannot give you the feeling of accomplishment that summiting a mountain can or the warm feeling from helping out those in need. All of my activities and friends have helped me keep focused in school by supporting me and providing me an outlet to use the knowledge I gain in school."

Most influential teachers: "I hate choosing favorites. Because of this, I do not have a single most influential teacher or even a group of most influential teachers. Almost every teacher I have had has left some sort of impact (big or small) on me. I admit some have affected me more than others. But each one has shaped and guided me through the years into the intelligent and moral young man I am today. I thank all of those teachers that have helped me through the years. I promise to make you proud!"

Fall 2011 plan: Attending the University of Arizona, Honors College, to major in chemical engineering and minor in Spanish and environmental engineering.

What is the key to academic success? "I think that the biggest and most important thing you can do to be successful in school is to just know the material. If you know it and understand it, not just memorize it, then tests and homework are easy and you actually do begin to love to learn."

Most influential teacher: Greg Hart, Aiming High, Skyline Elementary School.

Hester C. Sutton

Girard – Hester C. Sutton, 93 of Carlinville, IL formerly of Girard, IL passed away at 7:00 p.m. Saturday May 28, 2011 at Heritage Manor Carlinville, IL.

Hester was born June 17, 1917 in South Otter Twp., IL a daughter of Albert and Minnie A. (Large) White. She married Vernie C. Sutton Sept. 25, 1938 in Girard, IL. Hester was a member of the First Baptist Church, Girard, IL and a member of the Girard Senior Citizens.

Hester is survived by a son Howard (Priscilla) Sutton of Crossville, TN a daughter-in-law Glenda (Vernon)  England, Carlinville, IL, 4 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hester was preceded in death by her husband Vernie, a son Gary, a daughter Judy, grandson David Sutton, brothers, Raymond, Joseph and an infant Hiram White, sisters, Bertha Baker, Mary Rust and Julia Sponsky.

Visitation was from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wed. June 1, 2011 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Girard, IL with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Victor Angulo officiated with Mrs. Karen Sutton as organist. Pallbearers  were Daryl E. Sutton, Craig Sutton, Brandon Sutton, Vernon England, Virgil Sutton and Wendell Sutton.  Honorary Pallbearers were Jason Sutton, Travis Sutton, Shawn Eikey and Jordan Sutton.
