Royal replica a true ring-in

There are girls all over the world who would do terrible things to put a $4900 replica of Kate Middleton's engagement ring on their finger.

Lucky for them, a Palmerston North woman is happy to hock her one off to enable her and her family to travel around the world.

Colleen Sheldon won the nine-carat yellow gold and white gold, sapphire, diamond cluster ring after she entered a draw at Farmers for a trip for two to London.

The ring had toured Farmers stores throughout the country, along with a replica wedding dress made the day after the royal wedding.

The ring is a replica of that worn by the late Princess Diana, which now rests on the finger of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, as she is formally known. Mrs Sheldon said she was shocked by the win.

"When the woman called me she was really excited and it had actually just been a tough week – my father had died – so I might have been a bit aloof. But I was very pleased when she explained. It was a bit of happiness in a tough time."

Mrs Sheldon said she initially thought she may have won the trip to London, and didn't realise there was even a second prize.

"At first I admit I was a little disappointed it wasn't the trip, but when I found out it could go a long way to funding one, I was much happier," Mrs Sheldon said. Because her parents are Malaysian and live in Malaysia, Mrs Sheldon said her five sons did not get the opportunity to spend much time with their grandparents. "That is what this is about really, I have a brother in Florida and also my mother is still in Malaysia and we will be spending some time together as a family to go over and visit."

The ring is valued at $4900 and contains a 4.4-carat dark blue-black sapphire surrounded by 14 brilliant-cut diamonds.

Mrs Sheldon was presented the ring by Palmerston North Farmers store manager Kevin Crawford yesterday. Mr Crawford said he was "elated" to give it to a Palmerston North shopper.
