Schooner Fare will perform on brother's thespian turf

BRUNSWICK — Folk duo Schooner Fare, aka brothers Chuck and Steve Romanoff, will give a concert at the Maine State Music Theatre on Monday, July 11.

They will be joined by a third brother, MSMT veteran performer Ed Romanoff, for the 7:30 p.m. performance at Pickard Theater on the Bowdoin College campus.

The evening promises a blend of topical songs, country ballads and maritime masterpieces -- with a dash of Maine humor.

Schooner Fare is known for its lively concerts for folks of all ages, its signature harmonies and its winning stage presence.

Schooner Fare began the 36th year of its musical career with renewed energy and the release of its 15th CD, "Roots and Wings," in July 2010. The album features three new songs written by Steve and nine traditional songs.

Schooner Fare's early days in the 1970s and '80s were largely spent singing in Irish pubs from Halifax to Washington, D.C. In 1978, Tommy Makem heard Schooner Fare sing "Day of the Clipper" and asked if he could record it. That recording helped establish Schooner Fare as legitimate singer-songwriters.

Combining talents on six- and 12-string guitars and banjos, Schooner Fare's distinctive vocal and instrumental arrangements have been hailed by such folk music icons as the Kingston Trio, the Limeliters, the Clancy Brothers and Tom Paxton.

Schooner Fare's albums receive radio-play on four continents and are played on satellite radio. Chuck and Steve Romanoff's original songs continue to be recorded and performed by other artists in the United States, Canada, Britain, Ireland and Australia.

Ed Romanoff has appeared on the MSMT stage for the past 11 years. An established and acclaimed performer, he has also appeared on Broadway in "Hairspray" and "The Most Happy Fella," At MSMT, he has appeared in "The Producers," "My Fair Lady," "The Full Monty," "Titanic," "Hairspray" and "Jekyll & Hyde." This season, he can be seen in MSMT’s presentation of "Annie," running June 29 to July 16, and the roller-disco comedy "Xanadu," running July 20 to Aug. 6.

For concert tickets, ranging from $17 to $30, call 725-8769, log on to www.msmt.org or visit Pickard Theater.
