Storms topple trees, leaves thousands without power

— A strong line of thunderstorms tore through Upstate South Carolina on Wednesday evening, downing scores of trees and knocking out power to thousands of residents.

The storms formed in Tennessee and then moved southeast into North Carolina and the Upstate, said Patrick Moore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.

“We’ve gotten a lot of reports of wind damage,” Moore said. He said the storms’ top winds of 60 to 70 mph were powerful enough to knock down trees and power lines.

More than 5,200 Duke Energy customers in Anderson and Oconee counties were without power at 9 p.m., according to the company’s website. Tens of thousands of others in the Upstate, especially in Greenville and Spartanburg counties, also were without electricity.

At 6 a.m. Thursday, there were 975 Duke customers without power in Anderson County and none without power in Oconee County, according to the Duke website. The outage numbers in Greenville and Spartanburg counties were about 8,500 and 6,500 respectively.

Duke reported that more than 40,000 customers in all were without service early Thursday, down from more than 70,000 at the height of the storm.

In total, more than 46,000 utility customers in the Upstate and western North Carolina remained without power Thursday morning.

Jackson County, N.C., had the biggest problem, with nearly 9,300 customers without service.

South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. reports more than 4,000 customers without service. Colleton County, S.C., had the most outages.

Progress Energy reported nearly 2,000 customers without service, mostly west of Asheville, N.C.

Taylor Jones, head of emergency services for Anderson County, said a total of about 6,000 people in Anderson County lost power Wednesday evening, a figure that included customers from other utilities besides Duke Energy.

“I spoke with Duke and they said they’re bringing in extra crews and they’ll be working around the clock,” Jones said. “But it will probably be tomorrow (Thursday) until many people get their power back.”

He said that anyone with health problems that would be worse without electricity should stay with friends or relatives or contact authorities for assistance.

As of 9:30 p.m., Jones said, there were 29 reports of fallen trees blocking roads throughout the county. None of the trees hit homes and no injuries were reported, he said.

South Carolina SC: South Carolina comes home with second straight ...

South Carolina

South Carolina comes home with second true title By The Associated Press COLUMBIA, S.C. The Gamecocks flag is flying upon top of a South Carolina state capitol.Columbias classic rock station is taking requests for a schools fight song as well as state senators briefly put aside debate upon redistricting to call for university trustees to name a ball stadium after a teams conduct coach.Yep, Columbia is celebrating South Carolinas second true ball inhabitant championship. The group came home Wednesday to 11,820 screaming fans at a schools basketball arena. On a stage was a 2010 trophy. Captain Scott Wingo brought in a 2011 trophy as We Are a Champions played. The second trophy competence even have been a surprise to manager Ray Tanner. Athletic director Eric Hyman told a story about consulting Tanner upon a trophy case for a ball stadium after winning last years title. Tanner appeared to be happy with a design that would fit just a single trophy. Hyman pronounced there needed to be some-more room. I won out upon that one, Hyman said. The throng chanted a single some-more year to junior ace pitcher Michael Roth, who was picked in a 31st round of a Major League draft by a Cleveland Indians.Im pretty sure Ill see we back here in August, pronounced Roth, who in 5 appearances in a past two College World Series has a 1.17 ERA in 38 1-3 innings. The party happened just a few block from a Statehouse, where a governors declaration put a Gamecock flag upon a dome in a same spot where a Confederate flag waved for decades. The party keeps going Friday, when a city of Columbia skeleton a march down Main Street. Although it will likely never be as big as football in South Carolina, a ball group has found a special place in a hearts of long-suffering Gamecocks fans. After all, how many of them could imagine a time where they could speak about a inhabitant championship in a major sport? And now they can have a enviabl! e discus sion about which a single was better. The fans wore T-shirts not just celebrating a ball titles, but also last years appearance by a football group in a Southeastern Conference pretension game as well as a Gamecocks wins in a past 18 months over No. 1 Alabama in football as well as No. 1 Kentucky in mens basketball.Weve been through a grinder. Weve seen heartbreak for many, many years. Thats why this equates to so much, pronounced 78-year-old Frank Hays of Hartsville. The ball group also quieted speak about a chicken curse. The Gamecocks have won 16 NCAA tournament games in a row as well as eleven true College World Series games given dropping a opener of a College World Series last year to Oklahoma. Both are NCAA records. During a postseason run, South Carolina has won four games in extra innings as well as 7 of those games by a single run.We might not be a most talented group in a world, Roth said. But we are a best group in a nation. The win got a $75,000 reward for conduct manager Ray Tanner, but will also likely elevate him to larger heights. In 15 years with a school, he has missed a NCAA tournament just twice both time in his initial three seasons. His winning percentage with a Gamecocks is .699. And there will undoubtedly be a push to name South Carolinas 3-year-old ball stadium in his honor, as evidenced upon a floor of a South Carolina Senate upon Wednesday. Senators referred to both a back-to-back titles as well as Tanners work with his charitable foundation for both poor children as well as d ,kids with medical needs. These guys win a games, Tanner said, deflecting speak about his legacy or what he equates to to a school. I have good assistant coaches.Tanner guided a group that mislaid several key contributors, then suddenly got knocked with injuries. At a single point, Tanner had to turn to his bullpen because he ran out of healthy outfielders. Then, initial baseman Christian Walker fractured his wrist just before a final series with Florida, but still played, removing four hits in nine at-! bats in a two games as well as scoring a winning run in a 11th inning of a opener.Walker got a single of a biggest cheers of a night when he lifted his arm, in a black cast, as well as waved it to a crowd. He declined his coachs invitation to speak, saying thats your job.Tanner pronounced he was amazed by Walkers resilience to play through pain as well as by a number of tough plays his group made to stay undefeated. He pronounced a a single that stranded out in his mind a most was Wingos diving stab with a bases loaded, no outs as well as a game tied in a bottom of a ninth opposite Florida in a championship series opener. Wingos throw to home was short, but Robert Beary pulled it out of a dirt with his catchers mitt. Some people say hey, we guys are pretty lucky, well, maybe so, Tanner said. But these guys have to make plays. Its just not routine. You still have to field, catch as well as throw as well as create double plays when we need one. Story created Jun 29, 2011 - 23:35:14 EDT.
