Increased risk for area cocaine users

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Steuben County Sheriff has issued a warning to all cocaine users about a dangerous ingredient now being found in the drug.

Sheriff Joel Ordway says a livestock de-worming drug has become a common cut for cocaine and recent studies show some potentially harmful side effects. A study done at the University of Rochester Medical School found that patients suffered severe skin blotches on their face from a reaction to the chemical. Others showed a potentially fatal condition affecting bone marrow.

Sheriff Ordway says that over 75 percent of the county's cocaine comes from the Rochester area, so even if someone refuses to stop using, they should be aware of the increased risk.
