Oak Brook Park District hosts second annual Cori's Triathlon
On June 4, 44 youth athletes from all over the Chicago area took part in the Oak Brook Park District’s second annual Cori’s Triathlon, sponsored by the Cori Sikich Foundation.
The event, designed to promote exercise and healthy habits in a fun and exciting way, featured face painting, games and music along with the traditional triathlon swim, bike and run events. After the race was completed, triathletes were invited to cool off at the Oak Brook Park District Splash Park.
The triathlon is designed for kids ages 7-18 and every registered participant had a different personal goal in mind. Jack Donnell, 9, from Orland Park registered to prepare for the Chicago Kids Triathlon while Jessica Wilber, 12, of Hinsdale returned for her second Cori’s Triathlon and introduced her friends and fellow swim teammates Isabella Allar, 10, of Westchester and Genna Guarino, 10, of LaGrange Park to their first triathlon.
“The event is designed to provide a fun setting for physical activities that focuses on personal successes and self-esteem instead of competition,” park district Marketing Manager Jessica Alexenko said. “Every last one of the kids that participated in this event can be proud of his or her achievement today.”
The Cori Sikich Foundation is committed to promoting healthy habits and self-esteem at an early age and was developed by Susan and John Sikich in memory of their daughter Cori, who lost her battle with an eating disorder.
