The negative effect of shift working is a dilemma that affects the majority of the doctors which enables it to have its influence on patient's safety. Hence, it is necessary to design an excellent rota system that would help to provide 24/7 service cover, minimize risks to staff (doctors) and patients and enhances the effectiveness of delivery and services information.
Various studies have given evidence that shift working can have multiple short-term and long-term effects on doctors. A Japanese study within a university hospital suggested that continuous practice and large number of patients has correlation with increased medical errors. Short-term effects could be fatigue, needle stick injuries, ibs, post shift accidents (RTA). Lasting effects would come with the increased incidences of cardiovascular diseases, myocardial infarction, stroke, difficulty in sleeping and neurological disorders. The end results of long shifts are not only seen felt on health and also on the personal relationships.
A survey was performed on peri-operative deaths by UK CEPOD that linked the medical errors with fatigue and sleeps deprivation.
