Boats vandalized at Norris Lake marina

NEW TAZEWELL, Tenn. - Six houseboats and two pontoons were vandalized with what could be racially charged graffiti, Claiborne County Sheriff's Department detective Bobby Morelock said.

At the Cedar Grove Marina on Norris Lake, boats were found Thursday night with black swastikas and "racism slurs" spray painted on, Morelock said.

He suspects the vandals are a group of three friends, but no one is in custody. According to Morelock, they were "looking for reasons to start trouble."

Morelock stressed that it was not an act targeted at Cedar Grove Marina and that nothing was stolen.

"I'm not aware of any other vandalism of this nature at our boat docks," said Claiborne County Assistant District Attorney General Jared Effler.

Woman burned in house fire still critical

KINGSTON - A woman critically injured in an accidental house fire Thursday morning remained unconscious and in critical condition Friday afternoon in the burn center at Vanderbilt Medical Center, Kingston Fire Chief Willie Gordon said.

Sandra Webb, 56, was found in the bathtub of the North Third Street residence and was flown by medical helicopter to the Nashville medical facility, Gordon said.

Webb is the mother of 17-year-old Tyler Webb, who was shot in his bedroom in the same residence nearly two years ago and died of his injuries more than a month later. There have been no arrests in that case.

Another occupant of the home, Danny Marney, 52, escaped from the rear of the burning residence Thursday morning. He was treated for smoke inhalation at Roane Medical Center in Harriman and has been released, Gordon said.

Kingston Assistant Police Chief Gary Nelson received a cut on a hand while trying to break out a window in the house, Gordon said.

Gordon said the blaze was reported at 10:17 a.m., and the home's living room was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The fire chief said it's been determined that the smoking-related blaze started in a sofa in the residence's living room.

Ten die in Memorial holiday crashes

NASHVILLE - Ten people were killed in traffic crashes on Tennessee roadways during this year's 78-hour Memorial Day holiday period, according to preliminary figures from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

That's a drop from the 13 fatalities during the 2010 Memorial Day holiday weekend and 16 deaths in 2009.
